It’s official: Top vegan bangers announced

The hard work of judging has been done and the deliberations of the annual Vegan Sausage Awards have now been announced — with Plan*t Sage and Onion declared this year’s Supreme Winner.

The awards are in their forth year, and were hosted byThe Butcher’s Son. Judges included the celebrity vegan news anchor Mike McRoberts. There were 40 entries from which to chose the winners.

Of this year’s Supreme Winner, McRoberts said the Plan*t Sage and Onion had “an edge, a level of sophistication. It can be be eaten in many different ways: Breakfast, BBQ etc. The sage flavour and the sweetness of onion makes it a joy!”

Plan*t sausages are part of the hemp-based range from the New Zealand company Sustainable Foods. Products are based on the field-to-plate concept, the products are made with sustainably-sourced local ingredients.

New Zealand is a front runner in the global charge towards excellent plant based foods, ranking forth in the world for Google search results about vegan. There is a growing range of vegan products available in in stores with supermarkets reporting increased sales of plant-based food products.Vegan sausages are a popular choice, sometimes described as a gateway to plant-based foods.

The annual Vegan Sausage Awards are coordinated by the Vegan Society Aotearoa New Zealand Te Rōpū Whēkana o Aotearoa. In addition to Mike McRoberts, this year’s award judges were Aaron Pucci, Food and Beverage Industry award judge, Jasbir Kaur, President of NZ Chef Association, Auckland, Augustine Kopa, Pasifika Cookalong Chef.
