For Kiwis living with coeliac disease, shared morning teas or lunches at work can present a big challenge. Not being able to enjoy the treats on offer because they aren’t gluten-free or because the food may have been cross-contaminated with gluten, takes the fun out of any staff celebration.
Coeliac disease is a serious condition that occurs when exposure to gluten, a protein found in wheat and several other grains, triggers an immune response. It can cause a range of symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and fatigue, and if left untreated can lead to serious health issues. The only treatment for coeliac disease is a permanent and strict gluten-free diet.
Coeliac Awareness Week 2024 (June 10 – 16) is shining the spotlight on coeliac disease in the workplace to raise awareness so employers and employees can be more inclusive towards colleagues living with the condition.
These delicious gluten-free muffins from chef Nicole Percy are the perfect solution to shared morning teas or lunches to ensure your colleagues living with coeliac disease can join in the celebrations.
