Dates and new approach for 2023 Visa Wellington On a Plate festival season

by | Oct 5, 2022 | News

Planning is underway for the next Wellington Culinary Events Trust’s Visa Wellington On a Plate 2023 festival. The new festival’s theme is Breaking the Mould and it’s all about innovation and embracing change.

When Visa Wellington On a Plate started in 2009 the festival was focused on invigorating the hospitality sector during the quietest time of the year, now event organisers says August is the second busiest month for restaurants in Wellington.

With this in mind, a new format is to be rolled out presenting two bites of the festival in May and August. The May edition will showcase events and pop-ups, Dine and Cocktail Wellington, while the August edition will feature Burger Wellington and Beervana.

“We have a fantastic culinary community in Wellington who support and challenge each other to innovate”, says Visa Wellington On a Plate Head of Programming Beth Brash. The 2023 theme is all about pushing the boundaries, looking to the future, thinking outside the box and encouraging the trailblazers.

The 2023 guidelines have been released to the industry, with event applications open from 17 October until 7 November for the May edition of Visa Wellington on a Plate. “Initial conversations with industry players have been positive with some exciting ideas being discussed already”, says Brash. “We hope that the theme will give them ample space to play, think big and create something really unique that sets us apart as a food destination.”

From 35 participants in 2009 to more than 200 in 2022, Visa Wellington On a Plate has grown to become the largest food festival in the Southern hemisphere. The festival is independently run by the Wellington Culinary Events Trust, and contributes more than $30 million to the Wellington economy each year.

“We’re looking forward to embracing the change, and seeing some spectacular new culinary experiences for both the May and August editions,” says Beth.

Key dates for Visa Wellington On a Plate 2023 are below:

5-21 May, 2023 – Visa Wellington On A Plate May edition featuring Events and Pop-ups, Dine and Cocktail Wellington.

11-27 August, 2023 – Visa Wellington On a Plate August edition featuring Burger Wellington and Beervana on 19 + 20 August.
