A few Oktoberfest celebrations to know about

by | Oct 7, 2022 | News

Summer’s not here yet!  The current cold-snap is certainly lending itself to comfort eating with meat and beer.

Feeling like some extra large pretzels, tasty sausage, pork belly, mash, red cabbage, seurkraut and the like? Here’s a snapshot of a few options.

If you’re in either Auckland or Queenstown this month, head to either of The Bavarian‘s two locations between Friday, September 16–Sunday, October 9

If you’re in the capital this weekend, consider becoming an honoury German and joining in the Oktoberfest celebrations featuring local craft beer, German-styled brews, German food and the country’s most entertaining Bavarian bands. See here for details and tickets.

The Irish pub Jack Hacklett’s is celebrating Oktoberfest with a Bavarian Bash this Saturday, October 8, with tunes from the famous-in-New Zealand brass band Steinbenders.

A quintessentially German Bavarian Board of kransky, bratwurst, wholegrain mustard, chicken schnitzel, twice cooked pork belly, sauerkraut and a warm salted pretzel from the legends at Brezelmania. Prost and wash that down with a 1 litre stein of German-style beer brewed for the occasion by the team at Mean Doses.

Meanwhile for those doing in tough in wintery Dunedin, traditional Oktoberfest food will be available for purchase at the Bavarian Kitchen inside the Moon Tower. There you can have Schnitzel & Bratwurst. Dress your brat with traditional mustard & house-fermented kraut, currywurst, or a spicy jalapeño relish. Then grab some potato salad, rotkohl, spaetzle, or Big Mike’s pickles to go with it. Or just enjoy a pretzel the size of your head dressed with either salt or cinnamon sugar.

Beers are to be found in three locations this weekend: the main bar, beer garden trailer, and cans at Bavarian Kitchen inside the Moon Tower, including Lemon Haze Hefe & Caramel Kush Dunkleweizen on tap. See more here

Next weekend (15th) Cantabrians can join Two Thumb Brewing Co for their annual Oktoberfest event! Local beer, delicious food and live music.
