The new online, Auckland-based catering company The Sustainable Food Co. has upped the sustainability stakes this week, launching New Zealand’s first carbon-traced catering menu.
“The whole purpose of The Sustainable Food Co. is to contribute to a better world, and that means walking the talk.” says company founder Amy Klitscher. “We wanted to give our customers food options that taste good, but also does good,”
The recently-launched online store shows the carbon emissions of each plant based menu item alongside the imagined carnivorous alternative, so that customers can see the significant difference between a plant based menu and a meat based one. It then allows customers to offset any emissions of their menu choices by choosing to plant trees with the company’s partner, Carbon Click.
The project, which has been months in the making, is the brainchild of founder Klitscher and General Manager Fletcher Sunde. The duo used data acquired from the University of Otago on 346 ingredients to calculate the carbon emissions of each and every ingredient used in their menu.
The Sustainable Food Co. is celebrating the launch of its new brand and online store with a public event at Aotearoa’s most sustainable building, The Flagship, where guests will sample zero waste food alongside Aotea Brewing’s zero waste brews.
